Welcome to Passions by Ashley. As of right now I am starting a new experience. And that my friends is raising chickens, quail, trying new things, and trying to live a healthier life. Stay tuned with me to see how life is with a bunch of little bitty mouths to feed. Tomorrow I will be posting pictures of the eggs that are going to be put in the incubator. I would love for you all to follow along with me and see how a small town girl can conquer and enjoy all of life's little wonders.

As a side note: For all of those out there who are in the chicken business I would love to maybe trade some eggs and we can all enjoy the hatching and meeting the unique little ones. Passions by Ashley and Ashley's Bookshelf are teaming up to gather donations for three EXTREMELY IMPORTANT charities. You can find out about each charity below by clicking on their pictures.

The first charity is Newborns in Need. I truly love this charity because children hold a very special place in my heart. My heart just aches for them and I cannot help but to think why did this happen to them? They didn't make the choices that lead them to where they are now. I just keep in mind that God knows why and that He is keeping watch over all His children - big and small. Newborns in Need is where they gather donations [baby items and/or cash] and give them to those who truly need it, right here in the USA.

The next charity is Samaritan's Purse. I am not sure if you have heard of this one, but

it is amazing! There is the online interactive catalog where you can buy things for the people over seas in third world countries. You can purchase food for a baby for a week, or you could buy a dozen chickens for a family so that they can have fresh eggs.

Last, but most definitely not least is the crisis in Alabama due to the past tornadoes that caused an enormous amount of damage.

This was a terrible tragedy that took place not too long ago. It seemed that after many were just settling over the hurricaine that hit years back they now have to worry about rebuilding their homes due to the tornadoes. This money that is gathered for this cause will go to helping those people get back on their feet once again.

Today I received the most amazing lil cat ever. Was it a simeze cat or was a cute little tabby? Neither it was a BreadCat. My friend Burge is extremely talented in making these lil cuties.

I received the polka dot Wonder BreadCat. It is extremely soft and lovable. I couldn't help but take it into my arms and squeeze it!

I also received this cute little fortune cookie with the sweetest fortune in it.

Love is like wildflowers-it can show up in unexpected places

I have been creating ‘stuff’ as long as I can remember. In high school when I discovered there was actually colleges exclusively dedicated to the Fine Arts – hey a dream come true. I have a BFA is sculpture – however in the real world of motherhood (which I adore) time and space for my passion had to be re-invented. I thought sewing made sense – it fit into my busy life as a mom of three young children and allowed me to easily start and stop projects. I decided to develop and design a line of three=dimensional gift items. A friend 2006 introduced me to etsy.com, a place to sell all things hand-made and the business just grew from there.

What's your store about? What do you typically sell or sell the most?

I sell a lot of personalized cupcake hats – but around the Holidays all gift items get attention.

Why did you decide to open a shop?

Keeps me out of trouble!

What does your shop mean to you?

It is my connection to my ‘old self’ – important.

Thirty One: Thermal Tote Review

Hi everyone. I am not sure if you all have seen the marvelous Thirty One consultants around Facebook or not, but they have amazing products. Today I would like to introduce you to my friend May and her store.

She has generously offered me the chance to review this lovely thermal tote below.

Can you guess which design I chose? That's right. I chose the Wild Zebra print. This tote is amazing and it keeps your colds cold and you hots hot :] This will make a perfect addition for when you go shopping for groceries. Picture this: You run to the store to grab some ice cream for your little pea's birthday party, but then you realize that you also forgot balloons. So you have to leave the ice cream in the hot car while you wait for the balloons to get blown up. By the time you get back to the party, the ice cream is melted and everyone is sad because the ice cream is ruined. Then May steps forward and says don't worry with this handy thermal tote from Thirty One gifts I was able to keep this box of ice cream cold. You think May for saving the day and purchase a few of the thermal totes for yourself. Oh happy day :]

I take my thermal tote to work each day and I get so many compliments and it works wonders. It is also spacious enough that I can fit medium sized Tupperware bowls inside, not to mention a large bottle of Ranch.

Tell us a little about yourself, the seller behind the store.

I started selling items a couple years ago when my mother-in-law was diagnosed with colon cancer. I wanted to do something that showed support for her while she was fighting a tough battle. Most people know about the rubber bracelets you can buy on the cheap almost anywhere, but I wasn't such a fan of a rubber bracelet, and I knew my mother-in-law wouldn't be either. She is quite fashionable. While making support bracelets for friends and family to wear as a reminder to pray for my MIL I discovered a love of creating pieces of jewelry. Since making the support bracelets, my MIL has been free of cancer for a year and a half and I'm still making jewelry as gifts for family members in my spare time. It's been hard to keep up with the store lately as I also work and go to school full-time. I'm hoping this semester I can get back into making things for my store and expanding my product line. Who knows what the future will bring? :)

What's your store about? What do you typically sell or sell the most?

My store is an outlet for me to showcase the pieces of jewelry or other crafts that I have felt inspired to create. I love doing crafts but usually don't have anywhere to put them or use them after they're made. I thought opening an etsy shop would be a fun way to show others what I do. Sort of like a show-and-tell for me. The item that sells the best are the support bracelets. I have sold many outside of my shop (100+) and I think people enjoy wearing them as a reminder of loved ones who have fought cancer or who are fighting cancer.

Why did you decide to open a shop?

I decided to open my shop because I thought it would be easier to process my inventory and organize the pieces I already have. I also enjoy creating new pieces to showcase in my shop. It's therapeutic in a way and I can take time making the shop look organized and fun. Also, like I mentioned before, it's sort of a show-and-tell for me. Even if I'm the only one who sees it, I get a sense of accomplishment from looking at my store.

What does your shop mean to you?

It gives me something to do and be creative when I'm bored or feeling inspired. The shop is my little way of having a bit of control over something in this crazy world. It's a way to express myself freely without worrying what others might think or say - unless they send me a message or something of course. :)

Crayons or Color Pencils -

When I color (yes, I still color) I like to outline first in colored pencil or a darker color crayon and then color the inside a lighter color. Makes me feel pretty classy when I color a picture that way.

Anchovies or Pepperoni -

I'm not really a fan of anchovies or pepperoni. I don't like any type of seafood - I'm a Midwestern girl so we don't get fresh seafood here. And just knowing what pepperoni is made of is enough to get me to not eat it!

Pink or Blue -

I'd have to say pink. Even though most my clothes are black, if I do get a color, I tend to gravitate towards hot pinks or purpley pinks.

Cherries or Blueberries -

Hmm, this is a tough one. I tried eating a cup of blueberries everyday two summers ago. A week after that I was so sick of blueberries! I haven't had many sense then and I still don't go out of my way to eat blueberries. So I guess I'd pick cherries - well, cheesecake with cherries; does that count? :)

Flip Flops or Sneakers -

Oh I am for sure a flip flop girl. I wear flip flops until the temperature drops below 40 degrees. My husband thinks I'm a little weird, but hey, it's the little things that make us happy, right?

My first love is sewing. I have been sewing since I was 11 years old, so that's about 51 years now. The next shop that I would like to introduce you to is Stitches N' Giggles.

She has some amazing fabrics that are just as amazing to work with!

This are a few of the fabrics that I was lucky enough to receive. The pink and brown striped fabric are knit fabrics and as you may know they are a little tough to sew with, especially if you are a beginner like me :]

I made a pair of slippers out of the striped fabric and they turned out beautifully. The fabric is soft and durable. It washes really well and maintains its color. Many fabrics that you can buy from the stores now a days may seem cheap and there is little to choose from, but from Stitches N' Giggles there are a ton to choose from.

The fabrics shipped fast and they came neatly wrapped and were kept clean.

Here are some tips that Lori has given me for when working with knit fabrics.

PREWASH YOUR KNIT MATERIAL!!! Cotton knits can shrink up to 15% to 20%.

Make sure your scissors or rotary cutter is sharp!!

Do not let the fabric hang over the edge of the table it will cause it to stretch.

To prevent stretching while cutting first lay out a sheet of tissue paper, then the knit fabric and then the pattern and pin all three together. This will keep the fabric from stretching out of shape as you cut your pieces.

Make sure you use a ball point needle on your sewing machine, this will keep the needle from punching small holes in your knit fabric.

Use the proper thread, a cotton poly blend or polyester thread is stronger and more able to withstand the natural stretching of the fabric.

Choose the right sewing stitch on your machine. Look at the manual for your machine and see which stitches they recommend to sew stretchy fabrics.

Once again do not let your fabric hang over the edge of the sewing table it will cause it to stretch.

Last of all have fun!!! Start with simple projects til your confidence builds and watch a whole new world of possibilities open up to you.

Tell us a little about yourself, the seller behind the store.

Well, for the past decade, I've been a full time magazine editor at a major women's Fashion and Lifestyle magazine (yes,one you've seen in every stand! HINT: It's very GLAMOUR-OUS...)

My background in art and design, as well as writing, has allowed me to be part of some amazing opportunities (such as working with top designers like Armani and Toca, helping to create costumes for major Broadway shows such as The Lion King, and having been included in a coffee table book on design published by the Guggenheim Museum) I'm grateful for these experiences and I know that I've been truly blessed.

But I craved MORE. More home more time, more family time, and more time to indulge myself in my own designs and ideas. And the truth is I really REALLY missed my kids when I was away from them.

Now, finally, I've made the leap to opening my own company and working out of my studio in our home. I'm loving all of the creative brainstorming and especially enjoying my children while they are still young.

After a decade of sitting in my office overlooking Times Square and all of the craziness and chaos that goes with a job in design, fashion and Magazines I'm ready to take on new challenges and build this line into something that's really special while creating a company that will allow me the freedom to finally get more cuddles, smiles and family dinners.

Working full-time and raising 2 small children keeps me busy around the clock, but my children and family are the loves of my life and I'm finally living my dream.

What's your store about? What do you typically sell or sell the most?

My store is about letting some luxury and fun into your life EVERY day, not just on weekends and holidays, and not having to go into debt to do it!
I really get excited about color and texture so fabric, especially a gorgeous new print or some fabulous feather-soft Minky, actually keeps me up at night sketching in bed lol!
I get ideas from watching and loving my own children, seeing what they react to, what they love and what helps keep them warm, comfortable and happy and I bring those elements to the items I design and make. I just love to get emails from delighted moms who tell me how much their child LOVES something that I made, it really does mean a lot to me!

I think right now I sell a lot of Minky blankets as well as various stuffed stuffed animals. But now that I'm doing crib sets and bumpers I'm seeing sales of those pick up as well, which is exciting.

Why did you decide to open a shop?

Well, I've always worked in art and design in some capacity and am one of those people who can't stop sketching and making things. When I had my babies it just grew out of a natural love and desire to design and make things just for them. But when I'd go to Central Park or the playgrounds with them other moms would stop me and ask where I'd gotten that fabulous blanket or where they could get a stuffed giraffe like ours. I suppose that was the first seed that I could do what I love, spend more time with my kids and grow my love of design and creating into my own business.

What does your shop mean to you?

My shop means freedom, fun, creativity and living a life that is really and truly satisfying. It's waking up every single morning excited to get into my studio and get to work!

Review: The Cuddle Corner

Good evening everyone! I have an amazing shop that I want to introduce to you all.

Steph was so generous to send me a towel similar to this one below. I decided to use this picture instead of the one I took (I am not a very good photographer).

She is extremely talented! I was so excited when I received the package that I immediately tore through all the tape and bubble wrap to finally see my beauty :] Needless to say that it will come safely to you :] The sewing is exquisite! I turned the towel inside and out and did not see any mistakes. The towel is thick, comfy, and long so that it will grow with your itty bitty from birth to childhood.

This pretty pink towel comes with adorable Argyle Dot fabric, it is ready to personalize with your child's name in matching fabric! Argyle Dot fabric would also look great with a brown or orange towel!

This personalized full size hooded bath towel is the perfect answer to thin, small, and non-absorbent baby towels. Because I use a full size towel (approx 54" X 30", hood is fully lined with matching towel as well) to make it, it will be useful from infancy through toddler-hood! And because it is made with a real towel, it is absorbent enough to get your little one dry! By adding the child's name, it makes a very personal yet practical gift! Each letter is cut out by hand and individually sewn on.

Another thing that I want to address about this towel is that (1) it did not unravel or mess up when I washed it with like colors and then tumble dried it, and (2) it is made from a smoke free home (this is extremely important to me, considering that I have allergies and the smoke smell makes them act up).

I give it a 5/5 for AWESOMENESS :]

I am a stay at home mom to two beautiful boys and a wife to my wonderful husband for almost 9 years now! Cameron is about to turn 3 and Lucas is 6 months. I used to work as a software engineer but since having kids, I have left the corporate world! I love being at home with my boys and wouldn't trade it for anything! In my “spare” time (if you have kiddos you know what I mean) I love to sew and one of my favorite things about knowing how, is seeing something cool in the store and thinking “I could totally make that”! I love designing and thinking up new things.

What's your store about? What do you typically sell or sell the most?

My store is all about practical and fun things for babies, toddlers, and mommies! I started with the personalized hooded towels and have since added several other things including what I call sibling shirts (“Big Sis”, “Lil Sis”, “Big Bro”, “LilBro”), birthday shirts, diaper bags, personalized burp cloths, and a few other things. My current biggest seller is definitely the sibling shirts!!

Why did you decide to open a shop?

I started making baby items because I could never find exactly what I wanted for my boys AND all at once it seemed like every person we knew was having a baby! And baby gifts can get expensive! So I started making things that I knew I would love to have for my babies and then added a little personal touch by putting their names on them. They were a huge hit! I actually had never even heard of Etsy until my sister-in-law said that I should try selling them there. So that is how I started!

What does your shop mean to you?

I do my best to give each of my customers the best product that I can and along with that, the best customer service! I love to hear the stories behind the sellers and it makes me so happy when I hear that their child loved their towel or that they just found out they are expecting and want to use a sibling shirt to announce the new family member! So, to me this shop is about putting smiles on peoples faces and bringing them a little extra joy in such a fun time in life!

I recently came across this seller while searching for sponsors in my 500 fan celebration on Facebook. I completely fell in love with the quilted bags and handbags. I am married to a wonderful retired sailor, we have 6 children and 10 grandchildren. I am a breast cancer survivor. I worked for 20 years for the federal government, and retired just before I found out that I had cancer. Because my husband and I retired on the same day, he was home, and able to take care of me during my treatments. I have always sold something - when I was a teenager, I walked around the neighborhood passing out flyers about babysitting. I made crocheted animals and put them in baby furniture stores on consignment I was a Tupperware dealer for almost 10 years. Selling is in my blood :D

What's your store about? What do you typically sell or sell the most?

Created an online website, and started looking around for other high quality items that I would love to use and have, and began offering them to my customers. Since then, the product lines that I carry have greatly expanded and I love all of them! I am an authorized dealer for Heritage Lace, Victorian Heart, Keith Kimberlin, Harold Feinstein, Whimsical Watches, Tucker Bags, Little Bugs Boutique, and many more! Each company offers a different variety of items that I cherish. I also have several artists offering their work on my website. I feel that artists can never have enough exposure :D

Why did you decide to open a store?

Started out designing and selling T-Shirts and Sweatshirts at craft shows. Got to the point in my age and health where going to and from craft shows and setting up and taking down just got to be too much for me. Decided to offer my items online.

What does your store mean to you?

Everything! When I was working full time, I couldn't devote the amount of time I needed to, to get the website to where it is today. Since I retired in 2006, it has been my life. I love working on the computer, I love programming and designing, and as I mentioned I love to sell things. It gives me purpose. Too many of my friends who retired, just sat back and did nothing - I really feel that my website and the work I do on it, energizes me and keeps me active!

Crayons or Color Pencils?

Crayons - I remember the days when I colored with my children, now I do it with my grandchildren - love it!

Pink or Blue?

Blue has always been my favorite color - I have a lot of clothes in blue - I don't look that great in pink

Cherries or Blueberries?

I've always loved both, but we have many blue berry bushes, and I pick the blue berries - for me and to sell (we live on a farm and raise vegetables and fruit for a produce stand)

Flip Flops or Sneakers?

I wear flip flops whenever I can - I live for the day that the temps warm up enough to stay in flip flops for months!

Wow! I know it has been an extremely long time since I last blogged. I recently got nursing job at the local hospital and have been extremely busy with work and school. I have a few reviews and giveaways lined up for you all soon. I bring to you today a wonderful fabric store that has amazingly beautiful fabrics. Please help me welcome...

I recently came in contact with this store around January. I completely fell in love with their vibrant fabrics. They have many brand names including Amy Butler, Anna Maria Horner, Barbara Jones and many others.

I was lucky enough to receive a few of the Summertime by Barbara Jones fabrics. These fabrics came wrapped and secured in a little package so that no damage would be done to them. They were also shipped and arrived fast. Nicole was amazing to work with and was always there to help answer my many questions.

The white zippered pouch above is the pouch or bag that I made out of the fabrics I received. The fabrics were absolutely wonderful to work with. They didn't stretch like many others seem to do and they were extremely easy to cut and manipulate.

Tell us a little about yourself, the seller behind the store.

I have a degree in architecture and worked in the remodeling industry for several years. After my daughter was born I decided to stay home full time. It was then that my mother-in-law showed me some basic sewing skills and I caught the sewing bug which turned into mania. Sewing seems to come naturally to me and it’s so refreshing to make something. I spent so many years of my life drafting plans and directions for other people to construct things. Now I get to create and I love it! Plus I now own a fabric store so, depending on how you look at it, I am extremely lucky or extremely dangerous.

What's your store about? What do you typically sell or sell the most?

My mother-in-law and I own our shop together so it’s a family business. We are about buying what we love and hoping our customers will absolutely love it too. We are both impulsive buyers so when something hits us, we’ve gotta have it! We sell fabrics by the yard, patterns, purse kits and buttons. Right now our fabrics are our best sellers. The Summertime collection by Barbara Jones has done really well as have the fabrics by the company Art Gallery.

Why did you decide to open a shop?

My mother-in-law is a brilliant businesswoman with loads of experience selling on the internet. She was at a good point in her life to start a business with me so we went for it. I was looking to meld my passion with being the boss and have something that could grow as my daughter grows and eventually starts school. So far, so good.

What does your shop mean to you?

This is a hard question to answer. I suppose it means putting ourselves out there. We’re carrying our absolutely favorite things and hoping they sell. We really believe in the products and hope others will love them as much as we do.

Crayons or Color Pencils

With a young daughter at home I have to go with crayons. Plus the texture they leave on the paper is really cool.

Anchovies or Pepperoni

My husband makes a killer puttanesca pasta sauce with anchovies so hands down, anchovies.

Pink or Blue

Right now it’s pink. The fabric collection, Giselle, by Jessica Gonacha Swift is so perfectly pink and beautiful. I can think of nothing blue that would top that.

Cherries or Blueberries

Washington state, which is where we are located, grows a lot of cherries and blueberries and they are both delicious fruits. However, when used in fabric designs, cherries top blueberries in a heartbeat. They are cute and almost innocent. Cherries it is!

Flip Flops or Sneakers

I never have worn flip flops except to take a shower in the college dormitories. I’ll vote sneakers. I run in Adidas and kick around town in a pair of Vans.

A thought on trading clothing! Any ideas?

I am sure by now that you all have seen the sites where you can trade neatly used childrens' clothing, but the catch is that you have to pay for the box and the shipping. I have been pondering an idea for awhile and wondered how I could ask you-the people, about what they think.

My idea is to do a trading post here on my blog, using Mr. Linky for you to link the blog post of the clothing box that you are willing to send. The person interested will pay for the shipping only. Delivery confirmation is a must and the clothing must be neatly and not extremely used. The shipper of the box could use paypal to send an invoice of the cost to the buyer.

I believe there are still a few kinks that need to be sorted through, but what are your ideas on the topic?

Etsy Shop Review and Giveaway: Chickadee Shop {CLOSED}

Today I would like to welcome Heather from Chickadee Shop to Passions by Ashley. Heather has been an Esty seller since September 2010. She sells a variety of items from bags to zippered pouches.

Back before Christmas I received this lovely stocking from Heather and I actually hung it on the night before Christmas in hope that Santa would fill it to the brim. And little to say he did!! This stalking held up great with all of the goodies stuffed in side. I bet Santa got excited when he say the designer made stocking :] After all how many zebra stockings do you usually see lying around?

This stocking was not only brilliantly sewn together but it also came to me super fast. It was shipped Dec 16th and I received it Dec 20th. That is only 4 days! Heather is such a wonderful person to work with. She answered all the questions I sent her in a record time. I loved working with her and seeing her wonderful products.

Tell us a little about yourself, the seller behind the store.

I live in Reno, NV, which is surprisingly cooler than one would expect. My family moved here for my husband's job about 2 years ago from Oregon. Although I still miss Oregon, we've made some wonderful friends here in Reno. I have two kids, ages 4 and 1. They're both full of mischief and adventure and that keeps me very busy. On the side, I craft. There's a local etsy group, the Handmade Hustlers, which offers encouragement and opportunities in this craft venture. We recently held our first group craft fair, Indie Reno, and it was a smashing success!

2. What's your store about? What do you typically sell or sell the most?

Chickadee Shop is a relatively new shop for me. It's all about handmade and making things that I like. It's taken me a little while to come around to that idea, actually. My previous store, Chickadee Child, was aimed solely at the children's market, and eventually I found myself very tired of making an endless supply of bibs. Plus, it's very difficult to sell items in a saturated market. I've closed that shop and opened Chickadee Shop, giving myself the opportunity to craft what I feel like crafting. So far, it's been wonderful. I sat down and drew a stocking pattern on a grocery bag one night, and suddenly a successful product was born! It was really rewarding to take an idea and turn it into something that people really responded to.

Why did you decide to open a shop and what does your shop mean to you?

I've always loved doing art and craft projects, even back when I was a kid. I could sit for hours with my sketch pads and markers. I eventually went to school for graphic design and has some success in that field. However, I missed actually making something you could hold in your hand. The final product is sort of lost in all the computerized gadgetry we have today. Then came two kids and a loss of free time. For me, opening an etsy store is a way back to that ideal state of making something. You create something, you take beautiful photos of it, and then hopefully you mail it to someone who really loves it. Plus, etsy is a wonderfully open community of artists. Etsians are generally willing to listen, to help, and to encourage. It's a nice place to be.

I am back at it again! I am adding new items to my Etsy store! I created this fun and cute little sewing tools trio gift set. This would be perfect for anyone who loves to sew and wants to keep there sewing area spiced up with these tools.

I wish I had a decent camera other than my cell phone. This picture does not do this set justice. It is extremely adorable and functional. The pincushion fits perfectly on my wrist and allows me to have needles on hand (literally!).

Christmas Favorites

Christmas is my favorite time of the year, from the present giving to the hot chocolate drinking, to the cookies baking. I love the way that the family all comes together and one day out the year where we all get to see everyone at the same time. i love watching the kids open their gifts and seeing the joy and innocence on their face.

Hi everyone. I have decided to create a whole new post to feature some of the things that I like. A little about me: I am not a mother, but I do love babies and children. Around my neck of the woods I am known as the "baby whisperer". I also love crafts and baking. Please feel free to share any tutorials or recipes that you may have.
